She was our
ultimate girl crush in The O.C back in 2005- all tattoos
and bad-ass attitude- and has since gone on to become one of our
Hollywood style faves. Yep, it's been ten years since her
on-screen kiss with Marissa Cooper (yes, ten years!), but our
obsession with Olivia Wilde remains just as strong. Mainly because
whether she’s vamping it up on the red carpet or enjoying a casual
stroll with her baby boy Otis and partner Jason Sudeikis, Olivia,
31, never gets it wrong in the fashion stakes. So it shouldn’t come
as a surprise that she’s been snapped up as the new face of H&M’s
latest Conscious Exclusive Collection – following in the footsteps
of Vanessa Paradis and Amber Valletta.
Olivia’s longtime commitment to sustainability makes her the perfect face for the brand. After all, the actress - who is the daughter of two American journalists – has not only embarked on humanitarian aid missions to Haiti, she also runs her own eco company aimed at raising money for aid charities through retail, too. Phew- she's one busy A-lister. Luckily, though, Olivia found time to tell us all about her new role with H&M, explaining why this clothing range is setting the standard for ethical fashion...
Hi Olivia, congrats on your new role! What made you want to be the face of H&M’s Conscious Exclusive campaign? “I’ve been an activist raising awareness and funds for humanitarian and environmental issues for some time now. But sometimes I want to do more than just campaign - I want to make sustainability part of my everyday life.
How important do you think it is to merge sustainability and style? “For me fashion is about pleasure. I love to play with my style and try new things. To be able to do so knowing I’m wearing pieces that are more sustainable makes fashion even more enjoyable, because it feels like you’re doing something that's worthwhile. What’s great about the H&M Conscious Exclusive collection is that there’s no compromise on style. It’s a collection of pieces that I want to wear, that are all made from more sustainable materials. It’s how I think fashion should always be.”
Can you talk us through some of your favourite pieces? “One of my absolute favourites is a hand painted print dress. It’s got this really elegant shape to it, almost like it’s a fifties gown, especially with its layers of tulle in the skirt. It’s printed all over with hand painted images of birds that are just beautiful. There’s also an amazing long sleeve dress that drapes at the front and is tied with a belt that’s almost Japanese in style.”
From The OC to House to your latest film, The Lazarus Effect, your career has been so varied. Are you proud of all your projects? "I tried to follow the good material, but I didn't always do it. Because sometimes you need the money, and sometimes you think it's good material but you haven't quite learnt what actually works. You don't really know who you are [when you’re in your 20s], and you're trying out different identities."
And now you’re juggling all of that with being a mum, too! How are you finding motherhood? “It’s the best thing in the world. I love it! It’s even better than you imagine it’s going to be, and he is the coolest little guy.”
You’ve been with fiancé Jason Sudeikis for three years – what’s your secret? “I like having a real partner. It’s the model I grew up with. It’s part of why I was able to take so many chances in my life, because I felt like someone was watching my back. I could never imagine life without someone I respect, someone who offers me infinite possibilities.”
You’re both actors – does that mean you’d like Otis to follow in your footsteps, career-wise? “A lot of kids of celebrities, they can't help thinking they're more special than their peers, and it's not their fault they turn into these little assholes. We just want to surround Otis with as many interesting people as possible, and whatever he does with that, it's fine. He can become a juggler. He can become a mime artist.”
You recently turned vegan too - how do you find the time to cook when you are so busy working and bringing up your child? [Laughs]. It helps if you have the right support system. The person who really showed me the best way to do it was Alicia Silverstone. We were shooting a movie called ‘Butter’ and we were in Northern Louisiana – where there is no vegetarian food – and she cooked the most incredible recipes from the Kind diet for me everyday. I have never looked or felt better in my life.
So no carb-avoiding for you? “Fear of carbs, of gluten, of everything – we’ve distanced ourselves from the beauty of food, the art of it. It makes me sad when people say ‘Oh I don’t eat gluten… I don’t eat this [and that]. So I eat cardboard.’”
You were out partying at a recent fashion awards ceremony in London despite battling jetlag. Now you’re a mum, do you remember the last time you got completely wrecked? “I don’t. I was thinking about this the other day, and I thought, ‘I don’t get really drunk…’ Do adults, get, like, really drunk?”
It’s definitely a lot more embarrassing when you’re an adult… “It is way more embarrassing. I can’t remember the last time I was really drunk!”
